PROJECT ISHA

Diabetes used to be considered a disease of affluence. We know of course, that is far from the truth. Different types of diabetes can affect anyone, at any age, irrespective of the socio-economic backgrounds. India is home to over 77 million diabetics, second highest in the world. The spread of different types of diabetes such as type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, pre-diabetes, gestational diabetes, etc is alarming to say the least and requires urgent intervention. Ill managed diabetes is closely linked to several other Non Communicable Diseases as well.

Through Project Isha, we want to reach out to economically and socially disadvantaged people living with diabetes in India. We aim to relieve the financial burden of living with diabetes and fill the gaps of diabetes education. In this way we want to contribute to making successful diabetes management a reality for all. Since effective diabetes management requires access to money or other unevenly distributed resources, we plan to follow a multi pronged approach of providing medication such as insulin, tools such as glucometers, strips, syringes, pens etc as well as one-on-one weekly mentoring by volunteers (in local languages).

Project Isha is to honour the memory of Isha Shah, a kind and generous friend and ally to people with diabetes.
