Project Gaia (Women)

Women's Health & Diabetes

An initiative by Blue Circle Diabetes Foundation to support women and young girls in India—whether living with any type of diabetes or caring for someone who has diabetes.

About

An initiative by Blue Circle Diabetes Foundation to support women and young girls in India—whether living with any type of diabetes or caring for someone who has diabetes. Named after Gaia (pronounced ‘guy-a’), the Mother Earth goddess from Greek mythology, this project is dedicated to empowering, educating, and advocating for the unique challenges that South Asian women face in diabetes management—including socio-cultural barriers, stigma, and access to care. Women make up nearly half of the world’s population, and yet, their health often takes a backseat. Traditionally expected to be caregivers, many women with diabetes struggle to prioritize their own health—often lacking support due to cultural expectations, financial constraints, or lack of awareness. Since our first Women & Diabetes Workshop in March 2020, we’ve hosted numerous women-focused workshops, fostering a strong, supportive community. As part of this initiative, we also run a women-only WhatsApp support group, providing a safe space for discussions, shared experiences, and peer support. Through Project Gaia, we continue to amplify the voices of women with diabetes and caregivers, ensuring they have the knowledge, resources, and community support they need.
